The Porridge Cleanser!

eatsimpleloveyoga.com
Cleansing your face is a skincare 'must' to help achieve healthy, cleaner-looking skin - it helps remove dirt as well as deep cleansing the pores. But did you know that you can use porridge oats as a DIY cleanser?

Oats can help relieve itchiness, irritations and redness as well as absorbing the dirt and impurities, whilst exfoliating the skin without all the harmful chemicals that some beauty and skincare products have in them, making them the perfect cleansing product.

This is an all-natural way to exfoliate and cleanse the face. If you want to give it a go then follow these easy steps:

1. Grab a plan full of porridge oats, we suggest using our Porridge with added Cane Sugar. The sugar will help exfoliate those tough dry patches.

2. Clench your fingers together into a fist and run under lukewarm water for around 10 seconds. The water should seep through the gaps of your fingers and be partly soaked up by the oats.

3. Open up your first and the oats should feel saturated and soft, if not add a couple of drops/splashes of water until they do. Spend around a minute massaging them into the face. This can be quite messy so make sure you are leaning over the basin at this point.

4. Rinse face with lukewarm water, to help remove the remaining oats and sugar, then pat face dry. Finish off be applying a moisturiser of your choice.

The West Briton

Chris Body, gives a big thank-you to Grasshopper in The West Briton, December 5th, 2013.

Crunchy Granola!

What is it they say about the simple things in life being the best? In this case it's definitely true...

This happens to be the best granola you'll ever taste and the actual making is incredibly easy. You can have it with milk for breakfast; over yogurt; drizzled with honey late at night; or just grab a handful as you pass the jar for an on-the-go snack.

INGREDIENTS:
65g brazil nuts, crushed
35g whole almonds, crushed
25g macadamia nuts, crushed
25g hazelnuts, crushed
2 pots of Grasshopper Coconut & Date porridge
75g unrefined sugar
7 tbsp maple syrup
50g unsalted butter
6 tbsp hazelnut oil (from supermarkets)

METHOD:
1. Preheat oven to 160 C (fan - 140 C).
2. Crush each type of nut and roast on a baking tray separately until they turn golden. Do the same with the oats - bake until golden.
3. Turn the oven down to 120 C and mix the roasted ingredients in a bowl. Put the sugar, maple syrup, butter and hazelnut oil into a pan, melt and then add to the dry ingredients, mix well.
4. Place mixture back onto the backing tray and bake for 15-20 minutes.
5. All to cool, then break into large crunchy pieces.

And enjoy!

This certainly is a surreal moment and looks stunning!

Skiing in Chile

Photograph by Christian Pondella

Would you ever go skiing in Portillo, Chile, overlooking Laguna del Inca? Chris Davenport certainly did! And just look at that view - isn't it simply amazing.

Portillo is truly one of the world's most unique ski destinations. There is no town, just a old hotel at the foot of the lake high in the Andes, which caters to all skiers and boarders, families to freeriders.

We are certainly jealous - wish we could be there.

Climbing in the Verdon Gorge

Photograpy by Keith Ladzinski
"This particular area is accessed via kayak because of the immense canyon walls - it's the only way in" says climber Jonathan Siegrist, pictured above at around 225 feet above the Verdon River in France's Verdon Gorge. The canyon is considered to be one of the most beautiful in Europe, which we can see why from the image above. It's not far from the French Riviera and is an extremely popular area with tourists - and rock climbers of course.

This really is a picturesque scene and somewhere we would love to go for a nice long walk or even an adventure!

Pregnancy & Oats!

about.com
With a number of celebrity babies due over the next several months, we thought now would be a great time to give you a number of tips and tricks to keep you and your unborn baby healthy until the joyous arrival. Did you know that eating porridge oats is especially good for you whilst pregnant?

Yes! It’s true! Oats are an excellent potent source of vitamins, minerals and complex carbohydrates, all of which are needed to ensure a healthy pregnancy. They contain high amounts of vitamin B1, B2 and E which all work together to release energy and keep the body healthy.

Porridge is also a great source of folic acid which is very important to ensure healthy development of the foetus during the first trimester. Add variety to your breakfast by having a Hopper Pot of Fruity Coconut & Date or Cinnamon & Raisin or even keep it simple and sweet with just an added touch of Cane Sugar.

Not only is this beneficial for you it also will be for your baby as well.

Big-Wave Surfing!

Photograph by Fred Pompermayer
Surfing is all about riding those big waves.

Teahupo'o, a small village on the island of Tahiti, is known for it's surfing and heavy waves which often reach 2 to 3 m, and sometimes even up to 7 metres. It is also the site of the annual Billabong surf competition.

This village surely is a paradise for those who love to surf, even though it may seem like a dream place for those wanting to catch waves it is also known as one of the top 10 deadliest waves in the world - maybe something to be aware of.

Recently, surfer and waterman Mark Healey was keeping an eye on a storm in the area which of course meant big waves! 48 hours after the storm had passed he booked a flight and headed to the island to catch the huge waves that remained. It was recorded that these waves were the largest - but huge risks come with huge waves like this, and some surfers even end up with hospital!

If you ever plan on heading out for those humongous remember to stay safe, but have fun!

What do you think of extreme sports? Is it something you see as thrilling and exciting or terrifying and scary?

Recently photographed kayaking over the Santuario waterfall in Brazil, Chris Korbulic and his friend Ben Stookesberry love extreme sports especially kayaking. The sense of danger and unknown gives them a buzz and has an air of excitement. Stocking up on fuel food keeps them going and having a slow release of energy helps these guys keep strong and helps power through.

All we can say is well done to the pair as this is truly extreme... and terrifying!

Meet Otis - the skydiving dog

When it comes to strenuous outdoor activities that call for use of the word extreme we all get a little wimpy and filled with excitement.

So we have nothing but mad love and respect going out to Otis, the ten-year-old pooch, who this week took part in his 64th – 64th!!! – tandem skydive.

The daredevil pug grew up around the Lodi Parachute Centre just outside Los Angeles and has been skydiving with his owner Will Da Silva for the last nine years.

As these incredible pictures demonstrate, Otis seems to be perfectly safe in his custom-made harness and we reckon he looks well cool in his doggles as he jumps out of the plane at 3,000ft.

3,000ft: Otis, we salute your canine genius.

Fancy living in a giant egg for a year?

A pool of talented creatives have worked together to build the Exbury Egg, a tiny, floating home and research station, currently moored in the Beaulieu estuary on Britain's south coast. Artist Stephen Turner, who helped build this pod, will be both the Egg's client and chief resident.

The Exbury Egg, which was launched in May and will be Turner’s home for the next year, as he studies and looks for inspiration in the rise and fall of the waters, in an attempt to better understand our environment. Turner’s work has appeared, aptly, in Margate’s Turner Gallery, among other places, and he often concerns himself with the sea, nature, the man-made world and the persistence of time.

The interior is welcoming and is simply kitted out with a hammock, a stove, a desk and a wet room. Keeping the interior simple yet it has everything for your basic needs. There's also an egg-shaped skylight and a square, hatch-like window to light up the Egg.

Would you like to spend a whole year in the Exbury Egg? Let's hope he's stocked up on plenty of Grasshopper foods.

The next big thing

Are you warmed up for the Big Chill? All set for Glastonbury?  Whether you’re a festival virgin or mud-stained regular, music and mayhem calls for festival food that is space-efficient and deliciously healthy. This year’s festivals sees a brand new act on the line-up; Hopper Pots.

There are more festivals in the summer months than there are bands to play at them and if like us, a central topic of conversation is which festies you’re off to this summer then get prepared with all the food you’ll need (minus the space it takes up) as we introduce you to Grasshopper Foods and their absolutely unique pop-up pots that are designed with the space-and-time conscious in mind.

They come in three variations - porridge, soup and noodles each in three scrumptious flavours, and a quirky packaging that would just go perfectly with your boho look. These little pots fit literally anywhere, even pockets and are 100% natural and really good for you. Put down the burger and pick up a Hopper Pot.

You’ll also be happy to know that porridge is the go-to food for hangovers. We’re not implying you’ll need it... but it is good to know. Alcohol depletes sugar levels and the slow release of energy will restore them back to their normal levels

Go on...embrace the festival spirit. The world won’t end if you can’t maintain your five-a-day healthy eating regime or you’ve forgotten to pack your Chanel moisturiser. Wear your grass stains with pride, forget where you’ve pitched your tent, buy a drink for a complete stranger and be serious about having fun. It’s what festivals are all about.

And remember - what happens at festivals, stays at festivals.

Porridge 'cuts childhood obesity'

Eating a healthy breakfast could help tackle childhood obesity, researchers say.
They found a breakfast with a low glycemic index - such as bran, porridge or muesli - is better than sugary cereals or white bread.
It means children eat less for lunch and tend not to snack between meals.

The researchers, from Oxford Brookes University, say the findings could help dieticians devise the most effective diets to combat child obesity. The researchers studied 37 children aged nine to 12 to see what effect eating different foods for breakfast had on their hunger levels during the day.One group had a low GI breakfast of porridge, a second group had a low GI breakfast with added sugar, and a third group was given a high GI breakfast of white bread, a cereal such as cornflakes or a chocolate-flavoured cereal.

Each child ate each type of breakfast for three days in a row with about five weeks between testing. The researchers found eating a low GI breakfast meant children ate significantly less for lunch than those who had a high GI meal for breakfast. They were also less likely to feel hungry between meals.

Porridge is also proven highly beneficial for anyone on a low cholesterol diet, mums-to-be and athletes, to name a few. With Grasshopper’s three delicious flavours, you won’t be short of options too, all you have to do is add some boiling water and voila! 100% natural oats mixed with delicious raisin, cinnamon, date or coconut - breakfast perfection!

The study is published in the US journal Pediatrics.

Things you never knew about soup

Soup is an all-time classic, whatever the weather. Some might even say it’s the best meal in the world, but did you know all these little facts about the ultimate warm-you-up-and-hit-the-spot food?

The word soup is of Sanskrit origin.
It is derived from the su and po, which means good nutrition...
No arguing there!

Thin soups became all the rage in Europe during the 17th century, because the spoon was invented. (Before spoons they drank soup straight from the bowl - classy!)
The spoon was invented to accommodate the giant ruffles that people wore around their necks at that time. The spoon made having soup much easier.

Steam is a real benefit. Sipping the hot soup and breathing in the steam helps clear congestion.

Soups are great as fillers when you are on a diet. Don’t want to stuff yourself at dinner? Have a pot of soup just before. It also makes for a smart low-cal snack. Simply pick up an undeniable classic like our Tomato & Herb to make sure you keep calories low and taste high. Have it with a slice of wholegrain toast for a tasty and healthy meal.

Do you often cringe at the sight of vegetables? The perfect way to incorporate vegetables in your diet is soup - not only is it nutritious but it’s very tasty too. Go for creamy Mushroom & Chives, the mushrooms provide critical Vitamin D while chives boost your
immune system.

Get this: One pot of Grasshopper’s delicious soup is only around 100 calories... Also low on fats, sodium, saturated fats and sugar, our soup will keep hunger at bay while you get all the nutrition your body needs. Try our Lentil & Coconut as lentil is a great source of cholesterol-lowering fibre and coconut is a special source of energy - and its taste... spicy goodness!
